  1. I may be willing to try this. Back when I lived in Boston, a friend and I would take day-trips on the weekend to go skiing at Mt. Snow in Vermont (about a 3 hour trip). We never seemed to learn the lesson that stopping at Burger King just before getting onto I-91 was a bad idea. Their coffee tasted like boiled grass.

  2. See — it causes me physical pain to buy coffee at McDonald’s. The thing is, it’s really good coffee.

    Make sure it’s the premium roast stuff though, I’m not sure if it’s a nation-wide thing yet. (Michigan was one of the “trial” states at the onset of the switchover)

  3. For me, coffee is only good in the dead of winter with lots of flavored creamer when hot tea and hot chocolate are not available. I prefer my caffiene cold and fizzy.

    However, I love the smell of freshly brewed coffee.

  6. Please allow me to clarify. I have no problem at all with folks who do not partake of coffee, thus no conflict with Scalzi or Michelle. It was the mention of the abomination that is ‘flavored cream’ that caused my objection. That’s just nasty and not to be permitted in my field of vision or upwind of me.

    This is one of those subjects about which I am right and if you disagree with me it is because you are wrong, wrong, wrong.

  7. Actually, I’m not against additives to tea. Milk is only acceptable rarely (the cloves and cinnamon almost beg for milk) — it’s only coffee that must remain pure. šŸ™‚

  9. Shawn and Nathan, please note I only pollute coffee if I have no alternative to coffee to drink. In the shelter, I promise no coffee pollution. And I’ll gladly make coffee for those who like it.

  10. We don’t need 12 kitchens. We need one industrial sized kitchen and 12 “coffee stations.”

    And yeah, “flavored creamer” and “flavored coffee” are the nasty.

  11. Hrm. But I like some of those flavored creamers… in the extremely occasional times when I actually drink coffee at all. (People who have watched me prepare my coffee have remarked “would you like some coffee with that sugar and cream?? o.O”) I like coffee-flavored stuff (candy, ice cream, yogurt, etc), but not the drink itself.

  12. With all that coffee, I think we’ll need 12 bathrooms more than 12 kitchens. šŸ˜‰

    I try to avoid caffeine, but I too love coffee. I abhor the flavored creamer stuff – it’s sugar, chemical flavoring and transfats, for goodness sake! I do, though, really like real half and half in my brew.

    I haven’t tried McDs, because most decaf is putrid. The best for home brewing I’ve found recently is a regional Alaska brand – Kaladi Brothers Swiss water process decaf.

  13. Basically I see the shelter as one giant kitchen.

    And Nathan is correct – I like my coffee to taste like coffee. Period. And the smell of ‘that hazelnut crap’ makes me want to kick something.

  14. Shawn, I feel for you not knowing if you’re OK with the fact that it’s from MacDonalds. I actually crave their sasuage biscuits from time to time, but that’s the only thing I will get from MacDonalds. (should there be an apostrophe in there? I’ll let MWT tell us)

    And the rest of you, you can like or dislike my coffee all you want, but I’m the one who’s drinking it! I like good Kona, or Jamaica Blue Mountain, POR coffee (Plain Ole Regular), POR coffee with flavored creamer, flavored coffee beans that I grind, and flavored latte’ with frothed milk. My favorite latte’ was a Coco-van-car (my name) with shots of three flavored syrups, Coconut, Vanilla, and Caramel.

    I like my coffee like I like my women, hot and sweet! If there’s some exotic flavor too, it’s all good!

  17. I am huge coffee lover and I have tried to figure out what the rave it all McDonald’s coffee. I don’t seem to understand. It doesn’t seem like such great coffee. I mean, om the go and on the run, if I really want some coffee, I wouldn’t pass on it. But it surely is not on the top of my list.
