You’re absolutely correct, Tania, there were two pieces of unagi. The “Oregon Roll” on the left had unagi in it, but it wasn’t obvious by sight or taste.
I’m a total sushi n00b, so Katherine (my co-worker from Linux Journal) ordered a variety of goodies. EVERYTHING was wonderful. It was my first time with pretty much everything on the plate. Awesome.
I requested the unagi due to an episode of Friends. If you’ve seen it, you know which episode I mean. 😀
Good sushi is just wonderful John’s twin sister lived in Japan for 3 years, and she and I get sushi sometimes. and john’s dad is currently married to a Korean chef who 2 years ago went to a sushi school for 6 weeks. Ummm.
I totally forgot about the Friends reference until you mentioned it. Gods, Ross was such a goon.
And yeah, around our house, a commonly overheard retort is, “Ahhh, salmon skin roll…” (Which was Rachel’s response to Ross, for those that have no idea what I am talking about)
Hee! Sorry about the food blather. I’m hungry and tired and can’t go to bed yet. Grr. Back to catching up on my reading and fiddling with Charlotte’s story.
The “Oregon Roll” consists of blackberries and Evergreen trees, I’ll assume.
We have “Texas Rolls” here, too — I stay far away from them. They seem to always vary a bit but usually it’s some mammal the chef shot on the way to work that day.
UNAGI!!! One of my all-time favorites. I used to get a 15 piece unagi meal for $9 at the Odakyu Dept. Store food court to take home as part of dinner about twice a week whrn I lived in Tokyo. God, I miss Japan.
Prometheus was chained to a rock in the Caucasus, where his liver was eaten daily by an eagle (some say a vulture), which was regenerated every night so it could be eaten again (due to his immortality) for stealing fire from Zeus and giving it to us mortals for our use. It is therefore disrespectful to Prometheus when you eat raw meat/fish/vegetables.
<– not a unagi fan, too slimy. But I love many other sushi and sashimi items. Spider roll for the Americanized palate – cajun tuna sashimi for searing the tastebuds – and plain old salmon and tuna ngiri sushi as a staple.
Gesundheit!
I’m only seeing two pieces of unagi in your pict. Oddly enough, I’ve been craving miso and tamago yaki all week. Maybe in the morning…

Very cool about your sushi opportunities. 🙂

Hey! A food post from Shawn! THAT’S been a long time!
Mighty tasty-looking sushi, by the way!
I’ve seen a lot of Friends, and don’t remember that episode . . . bummer!

*sigh* Your sushi makes me sad…. sad that it’s been so long since I’ve been to a good Japanese restaurant that does good unagi.

Next for Shawn: FUGU!

And therefore, I don’t.
Fire good.

Or liver.
Michelle, especially live!
Liver, doggone it, liver.
Stupid spellchecker!
Ooo… you’re getting well-edumacated on sushi I see. How’s the chopsticks skills coming along? 🙂
Oooooh… unagi… [/Homer Simpson gargle]

Wow. 17 comments about a photo of sushi. THAT’s when you know you have an audience. 🙂
BTW, that sushi was awesome, esp the escolar… mmmm. I ate at least half.
I’m OCD about such things — we each ate exacty half. 🙂
And no, no audience here, we gots ourselves a community!
Yay for community! Man, if only Jenny Craig made a plum roll…
I’ve just ordered some sushi from the Japanese place across the street. It’s all your fault!
