Obama & Palin

As a rule, I never post about politics. The current race, however, really begs to be talked about. I have lots of friends that are much more intelligent than I am, so click on their links over there on the right. Many of them have deep insightful things to say about the election, and they vary in their actual political positions. Great set of folks to know.

What sparked me to post something is the realization that one ticket has a woman, and the other ticket has a black man. Awesome.

See, I know folks in real life that are horribly put off by a black man in office. (Ugh. Don’t get me started. The aforementioned people are not my friends.) Those same people, along with a whole slew of others think a woman on the ticket is a horrible travesty to the election process. My thoughts?

TEE HEE HEE!

Truth be told, I’m not really supporting either party very strongly. I won’t be staking any political signs in my lawn this year. I WILL be watching the debates rather intently. I have no idea who I’ll be voting for. No, I’m not really asking for feedback pointing me to either side. You won’t win me over, please don’t bother trying.

The fact that we’ll have either a black president, or a woman vice president — THAT is awesome, and makes my day.

Host Hopping?

After my site was crumpled from momentary Digg frontpage action, I’ve been more and more frustrated with GoDaddy. I’m considering a couple things:

1) Switching to Blogger. It’s free, it supports domain names, and if Digg brings down Google, we’re all in trouble. The downside is I’ll miss all my widgets, BUT Blogger seems to support almost as many widgets if not more. I’m really leaning this way, to be honest.

2) Switching to WordPress.com. Automatix can support the Digg effect quite happily, but unfortunately, domain hosting is not free. I really love the WordPress folks though, so I kinda wanna stick with ’em for the long haul.

3) Paying for a better host. NearlyFreeSpeech.net claims to handle huge spikes in traffic, and you only pay for what you use. I like that idea. (Hat tip to Topher for the link)

Thoughts?

Google Love

It appears that I have surpassed the Pheasant Hunting Guide, the lady Chiropractor, and the USC dude to attain the first place spot on Google when searching for shawn powers (Don’t even need the quotes! Hooray!)

See for yourself. I have to go find a bigger hat now… 😉

UPDATE: And ironically, my Google Page Rank has dropped from 6 to 5. The Internet is a weird place. 🙂

Quick Blood Pressure Post

Yesterday, at the doctor’s office, my blood pressure was 108/62!!!!!!! (No, that’s not 62 factorial)

All this “makin’ sure Shawn takes his medicine” is GREATLY appreciated. My blood pressure has never been that good, even medicated. AND this is the most stressful time of my work year.

w00 H00!!!!

Book Writing

Which do you think sounds more interesting:

1) A book discussion my car accident, where I elaborate much more than I did here. I’d talk about all the details regarding recovering from such a life changing event. There would be medical, social, relational, financial, and educational bits pertaining to my recovery. It’s a story people love to talk about with me, and I’ve been told numerous times to write a book on it. It seems like a boring subject to me, so I’ve never really considered writing it down.

or

2) Fiction. Which I suck at, apparently. (Just ask me, I’ll tell you)

or

3) Tech book, likely written in the Linux/Thin Client realm.

The deal is, I want to write a book this winter. I’m curious which sounds the most interesting. Please don’t hesitate to be blunt — I really have no preference, apart from a fear of fiction writing. Here’s I’ll make a poll, because those are fun. 😀

Hotter Than Wesley Crusher

Quick a little history: I was submitted to the “Hot Blogger Calendar” thingy. I find that funny. I find it funnier that I’m actually getting votes.

My boss over at Linux Journal sends me this “Press Release” for the Brain of Shawn readers… Ain’t the Internet a funny place? (I wasn’t going to mention the hot blogger thing, as it seems self serving, but the Wil Wheaton angle makes me laugh)

Yeah, I work with fun people. 😀
UPDATE: Now the LJ Press Release was submitted to Digg.
