Reader Request: Fireflies
So yesterday, Carlie left a comment saying she was disappointed in the lack of fireflies in my tour. Since she asked so nice, and also because she’s my boss, I figured I’d oblige her:
(Note: Carlie is also facilitating the iPhone adoption next month, so she’s on my short list of people to keep happy… 😀 )
The Dumb Gubmint
Well, this week is payday. That’s normally a great thing, but this week is a bit depressing. See, my awesome job at Linux Journal pays me (again, awesome), but the amount I get from LJ, plus the amount I get from the school pushes me into a new tax bracket. The precise tax bracket is one I refer to as, “Rape and pillage the citizen”. A full half of my income from Linux Journal is going to our lovely government. Why the gubmint decided this level of gouging was required is quite frankly beyond my comprehension, but they’re not exactly a cooperative bunch when it comes to “talking about things reasonably”.
So yeah, this paycheck (where I had my deductions adjusted to compensate for the increased taxation) will be painful. Ugh.
Fireflies and Stars
I’m at Bair Lake Bible Camp this entire week, and I’m actually quite a bit busier than I thought. I’ve been able to keep up with Linux Journal stuff, albeit a day later than I’d like on most things, but blogging here has suffered. A big reason is that wifi is spotty from my room.
Last night I was walking around the campus after dark. Something about the location here in southern Michigan creates a Utopia for fireflies. I think that’s awesome. Last night was particularly stunning, because while I looked over the enormous field of firefly covered clover/grass, the lake behind it was a glass mirror reflecting the stars from above. It was awe inspiring.
Then a mosquito bit me on the leg and ruined the whole thing. Stupid nature. 😀
Linux Journal Video
I forgot to post the latest video here. It’s all Linuxy and stuff. Enjoy.
Friday Cat Blogging
Hey, there’s still 5 minutes left of Friday. I made it. Barely.

This is KiKi, sleeping in her cat treehouse thingy. It’s only significant because I was using the treehouse to hold my laptop while recording my latest Linux Journal video, and she kinda freaked me out when I noticed her in there. She’s an awesome cat.
5 Day Mulligan
This past week has really really stunk. I call a do over. Or at least, let’s not talk about it anymore. For those keeping score:
- The product I was supposed to review didn’t come in
- I wasted a whole day working out purchase orders for used computers
- My replacement video did not go well, and was 2 days late
- I didn’t write a single article this week for the Linux Journal website. They should be mad at me.
- I haven’t had time to edit any of the magazine articles piled up for me
- The (1) firewire port on my MacBook Pro is broken, and to import video, I had to set a heavy book on the cable, wedging it in the broken port
- The laptop is under warranty, but I don’t have the time to be without it
- And to top it all off, I had to take Chewy back to the shelter today, because him and Tigger were getting more and more aggressive with each other. The shelter people made me lock him in the kennel myself. It was horrifying.
So, in spite of all the piles of work I need to do, I decided to take the day off and spend it with my two youngest kids. (Donna and Amanda were at a concert) We went to the park, and we went to Burger King. It’s been a pretty good day. 🙂

Mah Stuffs
I added an RSS feed widget thingy over on the right hand side of my blog, so if you’re dying to know what I have been writing instead of stuff on my blog, you can do so. I post 2-3 times a week over there (the third post being a video every other week). It may not be your cup of tea, but it’s me, so I put a link here. Because I can. 😀
How Does This Keep Happening?!?!
Oh well. I do have a special “UCF” section that I keep up with. I haven’t commented as much as I’d like, but at least I try to keep up on things. 🙂
